Christmas Cheer is a nonprofit charity dedicated to sharing the Spirit of Christmas with the underprivileged children and elderly of Alamance County.

We were founded over 70 years ago by a local fireman, Roma Fortune. Since that time we have devoted ourselves to his original vision of seeing that no child in Alamance County wakes up on Christmas morning without a present under their tree, as well as to the expanded vision of caring for the forgotten elderly.

Since then Alamance County has grown, and so has the need for assistance. In the early years less than 100 families a year were served. Today, a staff of five, dozens of volunteers and hundreds of sponsors serve over 1,000 families a year.

An excerpt from the children's poem, "The Night Before Christmas" say's ...... the stockings were hung by the chimney with care in hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there." That's what Christmas Cheer has been doing for over half a century, "Keeping Hope alive in the heart of a child."

What We Do

We provide Christmas assistance for Alamance County families who have children that are in the 8th grade or younger and the elderly 60 years old and older.

Our main goal is to provide the children with toys, food for their family's Christmas dinner and warm clothes when possible. For the elderly we focus on food and warm clothing.

Due to the generosity of many area businesses and clubs we are often able to provide other essential needs such as heating assistance, prescriptions filled, and school supplies for those who need them.

Our secondary goal is to act as a clearinghouse for all other county agencies involved in Christmas giving. We work hard to ensure that services within the county are not duplicated and Christmas resume sources are used fairly and wisely.

Most families needing assistance are referred to us by school social workers or other county agencies. Those who are not referred, but request assistance, are thoroughly screened to verify their need.

Why it Matters

Christmas Cheer enhances the quality of life in Alamance County because of what it offers to both those who need assistance AND those who give it.

When a family falls onto hard financial times, due to fluctuations in the economy, illness, or a family crisis, it encourages them to know there is a place they can go that will care about their children's Christmas wishes. We understand how hard it is for a child, as well as a parent, to endure the disappointment of an empty Christmas tree and table.

Of equal importance is the opportunity Christmas Cheer gives to those who have been blessed with adequate or abundant finances. We allow our community, not only the opportunity to give financial support, to those experiencing hard times, but the greater opportunity to get involved with a hurting family and make a difference.

When we respond personally to the needs of those around us, a spirit of kindness and generosity is fostered. It is this spirit that has spread throughout Alamance County for so many years, making it a great place to live, work and play. A place you can be proud to call HOME.
